Education Programme

Talks, Workshops & Events


Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC)  developed an educational programme which supported the exhibitions, The Arts of Islam: Treasures from the Nasser D Khalili Collection.

From that, the visiting public was more closely engaged with the compelling themes and unique artefacts that made up the exhibitions.

The programme which took place mainly at the Emirates Palace but also at the Cultural Foundation in Abu Dhabi was open to both adults and children.  

 

Below are descriptions of the programmes that were offered

Reading Room at Emirates Palace

As part of the exhibition, a room dedicated to education and study. The reading room contained numerous books, learning resources, online guides and other informative tools that were free to use. These aides were there to further inform and increase understanding about the Khalili Collection and the fascinating subject of Islamic art.

 

Lecture & Tour Programme

Talks and tours throughout the exhibition were previously booked by participants.  

 


Closing Discussion & Reception, 8th April 2008

TDIC brought together some of the region´s foremost experts on Islamic art, culture and heritage for a final talk and discussion panel.

Interactive Workshops, in partnership with ADACH

Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH) ran a special programme of art workshops at Abu Dhabi´s Cultural Foundation, from February 20th to March 10th, 2008, as part of The Arts of Islam Education Programme. These participatory sessions focused on skills and techniques related to the artefacts shown in the exhibition.

All Workshops were FREE of charge.

Calligraphy Workshop
Ibn Al Bawaab with Emirati Master, Mr. Mohammed Mandi

Mohammed Mandi is a U.A.E artist with a Diploma in Calligraphy from Egypt, was an apprentice of the renowned calligrapher Sayed Ibrahim. Mandi has held eight solo exhibitions in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Paris and Oman.

The workshop involved hands-on calligraphy by participants, as well as demonstration by the Master, who also introduced them to the principles of Islamic calligraphy, and design, and their different styles and techniques.

Persian Painting Workshop
Isfahan with Iranian painter and poet Sharareh Salehi

Sharareh Salehi, artist, & poet, born in Tehran, Iran, completed her fine art studies in Iran, France, and Germany, has held ten solo exhibitions in Tehran, Tunis, Paris, and Abu Dhabi, also taking part in numerous group shows worldwide.

Expert in Persian painting, Sharareh Salehi spoke about the different styles, techniques, and perspectives as seen in ancient Persian painting. Her workshops  included the screening of a documentary film about Persian painting, which was followed by a discussion.

FILM: Iranian Miniatures Directed By Alireza Qassemkhan
Alireza Qassemkhan is an Iranian film-maker, and TV producer.

Ceramics Workshop Ibreeq with Iraqi master, Maher Al Samarai

Maher Al Samarai is a ceramics artist, born in 1950 in Samaraa, Iraq. He has held five solo exhibitions worldwide, including in Baghdad, LA, Amman and Abu Dhabi, and participated in many international festivals.


The workshop focused on the important role of ceramics as an applied art during the history of Islamic art. Participants discovered the history, and magical world of ceramics.

The workshop involved hands-on ceramics making, using machines and specialised equipment, as well as presentations and demonstrations by the master.
