Splendours of Mesopotamia

About Ancient Mesopotamia

The geographical area of Ancient Mesopotamia covers what is modern day Iraq and part of Syria. From 6000 BCE inhabitants of Mesopotamia lived in villages, farming the land and domesticating animals. But in 3000 BCE the first cities were formed, which gave rise to complex administrative arrangements and the introduction of writing to record transactions. From this time the history of the region can be concentrated into three different but closely related civilizations: Sumer, Babylonia, and Assyria.

Meaning ‘land between two rivers’, Mesopotamia was very fertile and known as the granary of the ancient world. The region has been inhabited from 8000 BCE to today, meaning that it is a rich archaeological site, with many areas still to be explored.
